Masks
|
| Why do children wear costumes and go
trick or treating at Halloween? There are many stories about how it might
have begun.
One is that people in earlier times felt uneasy in autumn and winter. They believed there were ghosts and evil spirits outside. When people went out after dark they often wore masks and animal skins in order not to be recognized by the spirits. They also hoped the demons would not play tricks on them if they gave them a treat. They set out food and drink. Some sources say the history of "Trick'O'Treating" goes back to the celebrations of All Soul's Day in Britain. In former times the poor went begging on that day and the housewives gave them special treats called "soulcakes". In return the beggars promised to say a prayer for the dead so that their souls would rest in heaven and not come back to trouble the living. Over time the custom changed and now children dress up in scary costumes, go from house to house and frighten neighbours shouting: " Trick or treat!" The people offer apples, sweets and money to the costumed visitors. |
